Spoilers Deployed after landing?

Evening ya'll!

I spent the day spotting at CMH today on top of the parking garage and I noticed something I've NEVER seen before so I decided to post and see if I could get some sort of explanation. Between 15:00hrs - 19:00hrs every landing aircraft kept their spoilers deployed not just after vacating the runway but up until they had pulled up to the gate. Does anyone have any idea why they would all do this!?

I flew from NRT to PEK in a NW A330 and I noticed that the spoilers were extended the whole time after landing, taxi, and while parked after shutdown at the gate. I wonder why.

You probably saw a few E170s/ 145s there. I can assure you the spoilers weren't up that long. They go down with wheel speed. In the case of both its when the aircraft is rolling at less than 25kts.

What does wind have to do with it? On the CRJ, spoilers, or more appropriately ground lift dumping is left in the Auto postion. On landing they deploy automatically according to system logic of weight on wheels, radio alt and wheel spinup speed. They also retract automatically according to wheel speed, power lever postion, speed and time on the ground. So I have no idea why other aircraft would be taxiing to the gate with theirs still deployed. Maybe they all just forgot?

Could be pilots forgot to lower until they got to the gate. Did they do high speed turn offs? How busy was it?

What runway were you watching and where were they parking? Usually stowing the spoilers (if there is not automatic function for this) is a part of the after landing checklist. If the workload is high, the checklist may be delayed until conditions permit. A short taxi time combined with a high workload may mean that these aircraft were reaching the gate before the crew got to this point in their duties.

Both 28L and 28R (from the parking garage you can go back and forth). If you know how CMH is set up depending on which side their gate is usually depends on which side they land on. So having said that taxi time really wasn't that long. Here's a pic I took looking toward 28R.

Maybe they didn't get to it on the checklist. Airbrakes are the first thing on our After Landing checklist and then bring the flaps up. We aren't supposed to touch anything until we are clear of the runway though. Sometimes you are busy and don't start the checklist as soon as you are clear.

It's always funny to watch someone who didn't run the checklist when they shut down and get out and see the "boards" still up, they look around to see who saw and get back inside to stow them!

Every landing aircraft kept them up until they were parked? That is very weird. And I'm not going to bother with the mathematical possibility of every crew for 4 hours forgetting to run the after landing checklist.

I assure you.. since I fly them... that we don't even have an "arm" position for them... they are completely automatic... there is no arming, no deploying, no stowing, of those done by the crew on landing.... so, it is 100% taxiing at a speed greater than 25+ knots... or you got that one having a mechanical issue... (only 2 options).... my bet is that it was faster than 25+ knots....

haha... but it's a pretty sleek lil' jet you have... Some of our erj's are gettin' old for their mission... already 13 years old... kinda hard to believe the RJ has been flyin' around that long.. but oh well...

The 170 is equally automated. Even more so as it will only deploy the spoilers with the flaps at a landing setting (5 or full).

The Chautauqua aircraft you took the picture of was taxiing a bit fast. They'll deploy at speeds over 25kts automatically as long as the thrust levers aren't up too high. This is based on wheel speed. Airspeed has nothing to do with it. They were taxiing in after landing (flaps up) but if they were taxiing out with flaps at 9 for Takeoff you'd see the same thing. Good way to let everybody know you're going a bit fast.

But what do I (or pinnaclekid) know. We just fly the damn thing.
