Which aircraft engine is designated as #1 on an aircraft? Is engine number 1 on the port or starbord side of the aircraft? Also does in make a difference in a multi-engined a/c such as an A340 or B747?

Engines are numbered for the left to the right, even on multi engine aircraft.
Engine #1 is the furthest out on the left wing, the #2, #3 and so on. On trijets the #2 engine is in the tail.
