757 Can Land At Maximum Takeoff Weight?

Why can the 757 land at MTOW (i.e. land immediately after takeoff without dumping fuel), but other planes can't? Which other large airliners can?

The 767's, for example, also can land above maximum landing weight. The fuel-dump system, if an airline has it installed, only dumps from the center tank. Or, if an airline doesn't even have it installed, you'll of course have to land overweight.



A340-500: 4 engines 4 long haul. 777-200LR: 2 engines 4 longer haul

ANY airliner can land at max takeoff weight in an emergency. If landing above Max Landing Weight, there will be additional checklists and maintenance procedures to deal with. At some airports (think hot and high places) and in some aircraft in some situations there may be issues with Approach Climb Limiting Weight, but that is a very esoteric subject and is generally not terribly restrictive.

Max LDG weight on the -200's I used to fly was 198.0, on the -300's it was 224.0, both considerably below the MGTOW. A landing above those numbers would result in an overweight landing inspection prior to further flight.

As others have noted, all airliners are physically capable of doing it. You just need to do the appropriate checks afterwards. Provided it's done at a suitably low sink rate, it can be done without damage. The different across airliners is how sensitive they're going to be to landing at high sink rate...a 747 or A340 at MTOW must be treated much more gingerly than a 757.

Is that 767 specific? Several other models can dump from all tanks.

Mainly because the mass and inertia are quite a bit higher as gross weight increases and imparts greater stresses on the landing gear. I would also place the 747-100SR/400D in the same category.

No. For really long range aircraft the difference between MLW and MTOW can be very large.

For example, for the base 757-200, the MTOW of 220,000lbs is only 11% higher than the MLW of 198,000lbs.

But for the smallest 772, the 508,000lbs MTOW is 32% higher than the 441,000lbs MLW.
