I've ridden on the MD-80 jumpseat many times, and have always wondered what the "grunting" noise is that I hear right after takeoff or during approach and landing. I thought it might be the altitude alerter or the gear horn, but I think those make different sounds. Any MD-80 pilots out there?

It's the sound of the flightcrew trying to get that pig off the ground with asphalt still underneath the gear.
Just kidding, I've never heard it myself.
Back to the wonderful Sonoran desert just in time for the worst part of the year-winter.

What you hear is the elevator trim aural warning. When using primary or secondary trim it sounds every 1/2 degree of stabilizer motion. There is also a "stabilizer motion" voice alert alternating with the "grunting" noise.
It's main purpose is to alert the pilots that elevator trim is operating, and if on autopilot,to call their attention to a possible uncommanded trim input indicating a "runaway" elevator trim.
