Thats surprising. Ive never seen an A380 take off from the outside but i have done travelled twice on it and when your in the cabin you cant hear a thing. The first time i flew it i was amazed by how quiet it was!

As was I when I first flew on the A380. I was fortunate enough to see/hear an A380 (Qantas) departing over Darling Harbour in Sydney last February. I heard a faint noise above me which sounded "new" to my "aviation ears".   When I looked up I was almost too late to make a picture of this beautiful low flying bird. Which to me is proof to which I can personally testify that the A380 is super-quiet. As well from the outside as on the inside.   The A380 does make a specific sound which (to me) sounds quite different from an A340-600 or a B77W.

And like i say i can testify with you! Its sort of an old cliché isnt it, people saying how quiet and aircraft is but the A380 is super quiet on the inside. Shame i havent seen one take off yet!

Though I agree with you on the lower noise levels of the A340-600, I was more hinting at the difference in sound. he B77W sounds quite different to me then an A340-600. But both do not "sound" like the A380, which (to me) has a specific sound of her own.  

But I like to hear an aircraft engine, especially when I am at the spotting points near AMS to see, hear and smell as many different airliners as possible. Although they more or less all smell the same.

Well three things. First a great opportunity to state that the thread cannot be about much at all - illegal in general, but in relation to the A380 legal cos there is not much noise to have a thread about!!!

Second is that yes the video has collected some audio of what might well be a Trent or even four Trents, but the sound track aside from having s*d all to do with the video of a hovering A380 could have been collected anywhere.

Third, if it is an A380 noise, then is it typical of them in the hover. I knew those Trents were powerful but over 500 tonnes of lift between them, now that is impressinve. I had heard of 100k engines, and of 25k engines, but 100+ tonne engines is a major advance.

PS If you cannot understand this post, "watch" the video, or non video as the case may be.

And I'll third that. I flew recently on the A380, I was at the back on the upper deck and apart from a 'whistle' on engine spool up I was blown away by how quiet it was! In the cruise the wind noise (normally quite prominent at the back of an aircraft) was also very quiet.

That audio sounds like one of those old A321's with CFM engines.

I've seen (and heard) it depart twice. Sounds to me like mix of Trent800 and GE90 with noise suppression.

As the clip only shows a static aircraft, this could be of absoloutely anything. As to the volume, well it all depends on how much you have the volume turned up. Unless noise is measured using calibrated equipment, you can draw no conclusions at all.

Personally, it sounds pretty quiet to me.

It sounds quieter than the Trent 1000's on the 787, but I don't know how far away the SQ A380 was from the microphone compared to the 787 (which is usually quite close to the microphone).

Definitely has that Trent "buzzsaw" sound, however.

As for interior noise levels, I find the A380 very quiet on take-off, but then I am up in Suites Class so there is some sound baffling provided by the walls.

I can not second what.

I flew on SQ 388 fron London to Singapore. What struck me was that we went directly up to cruising altitude and stayed there. No burning of fuel and make the climb in stages as usual and it did not struggle at climb after take of at all. Went straight up.

This has been discussed here before. The answers giving in those discussions was that the wings are designed for the 380-900. The wings being on a "lighter" aircraft gives it extra lift.

I am no engineer so I only pass what was discussed earlier.

Great video, stupid me didn't even know that the A380 has a VTOL mode and can stand in the air!

The A380 is extremely quiet. It has something to do with the turbines being assembled in a different way in the new engines, especially the EA ones.

I don´t know what is standard or not.
Just tell what I experienced on my flight from LHR to SIN. We went directly up to 36.000feet after take off and stayed there until descending to SIN

Me not being a pilot. I leave the flying to them. If they went directly up this time I guess they have reasons to do so.

Here is the answer I got in that thread.

Following text is quoted from another thread.

Firstly the A380's wing/lift capability was designed with growth to at least 650 tonnes built in, so even at the 560 tonne MTOW, she's going to climb pretty well.

Secondly, testing showed that actual lift was 2%-3% more than was anticipated. This showed up in lower landing speeds and take-off speeds.

Thirdly, LHR-SIN is about 5 600Nm, eastbound. It could be as little as 5 000Nm-5 200Nm Air distance with the following jet stream. An A380-800 with what I think is a "typical" full load around 70-75 tonnes could be taking off at as little as 500-510 tonnes ("little" )

She does climb pretty quick...

Hearing the A380 take off numerous times at YYZ my impression is that the aircraft is substantially quieter than others. Much quieter than a KLM A330 or AI B777 that took off right before or immediately after. Also quieter than a FedEX MD11. Not only are the engines quieter when close, but the sound seems to die off much quicker. The jetblast is unbelievable afterwards so you can understand the FOD concern. Grass and small sticks blown up and when the wind is right all over the spotters  .

I'm betting this poster is probably referring to the aptly-named "buzzsaw" sound during full power. It is actually pretty common, but doesn't fit most people's stereotyped impression of what a jet engine is "supposed" to sound like. It is described by ScientificCommons thusly: “Buzz-saw” noise is radiated from a turbofan inlet duct when the fan tip speed is supersonic. Different manufacturers and models produce varying levels of this sound, ranging from inaudible to overpowering. A notorious example would be the RB211 family. The such-equipped L-1011 in the video below sounds almost identical to whatever is making the noise in the video linked by the original poster. You'll see later on it's much quieter.

Semi-related and also probably equally interesting is the intense, ear-shattering noise produced by many Soviet-era jetliners on takeoff. However, they become much much quieter than even many contemporary western types during cruise.

Purely anecdotal, but I was leaving Heathrow to come home a few months ago, and as my Delta 764 was pulling onto the taxiway, a 380 was lumbering down the active runway just in front of us. I saw about 20 seconds of the roll, and was amazed that it was pure silence from outside until about the last 5 seconds of my viewing. What I heard was a very muffled rumble, nothing like the noisier takeoff grumbling roar that you always hear from the jets in front of you. I knew the brute was quiet inside (my preference for A aircraft over B), but was really surprised at how quiet it had to be on the outside. Let's hope AF brings them into Atlanta...

Personally I like to hear the deep loud growl on take off whether inside or outside the aircraft. Loved the deep bass, almost a moan, the old L1011 made with the RR engines when each started to spool. The newer engines have a much smaller "footprint" of sound. Will be very interesting to hear the 787 and 748 on take off roll live as well. Now on a AC A333 for example all you hear is a much quieter start up, kind of akin to a vaccuum starting at a distance  .
