Visiting Rio, and today, from atop Sugarloaf, I watched the TAM and GOL jets fly below us as they approached 2R at SDU. I assume that this approach is only useable in good VFR conditions, correct?

And if what I read is correct, at 4300 feet long, is this the shortest runway anywhere used by Boeing and Airbus airliners?

Alaska used to fly 727-100 and 737-200 into Dutch Harbor, Alaska and at only 3,900 feet, it was probably the shortest runway used by commercial jet aircraft in scheduled service. It's no longer served so SDU is probably the shortest jet runway now.

Actually, it would be SDU's 02L/20R at 4133 ft long.

By the way, welcome to Rio. You came on a sad time for the city after all the flooding last week, but I hope you manage to have a good time despite everything.

GOL operates a 737-800 SFP (short field performance) specifically for SDU, and to some extent CGH which actually is the most frequent destination.

Last time I was at sugarloaf landing conditions were pretty good - yet a Webjet B733 aborted landing 3 full times before making it in.
