TU 204/TU-154 Landing Gear

Hi, just a quick question, I woke up in the middle of the night wondering about this. Why was the TU-204 not built with the same type gear as the -154? Was the -154 heavier, with the third engine? I looked at the Tuploev website and the max t/o weight for both families is roughly around the same-104-110t. Is it maybe because the rough runways which Soviet aircraft had to work with are being upgraded and modernised?

I think both aircraft are beautiful, and it's sad to see the TU-154 kind of disappearing.

The Tu-154 was designed to operate from poorly prepared runways, hence the six wheel bogies to spread the load. I doubt that was a design requirement for the Tu-204. The pylon mounted engines of the Tu-204 would have made the pod mounted main gear arrangement of the Tu-154 awkward to use, so it would have been harder to find space to stow a six wheel main gear.

It will be sad to see the Tu-154 disappear from the skies, though it wasn't an aircraft I enjoyed being a passenger in.

Cheers. I had a feeling it might be that. The TU-204 sure would have looked cool with that gear though.....totally for got the fact that the -154's gear retracts into a pod on the wing...which is completely different from the -204!  blush

Truth is, in 20 years between Tu-154 and 204, much has been done, and the need for ability to work in rough enviroment has lessened.

Ha, yeah, my mind was full of Tushkas after reading Airways this month, and in a sadder way, becasue of the Polish crash.
