I know that when I have flown Qatar Airways from DOH to IAD, we always park at a remote stand in front of the tower and then take a mobile lounge to the terminal. I'm sure the aircraft after cleaning is brought to the gate for its evening departure. Since QR has only one flight in/out of IAD, this got me thinking on a number of questions:

1. Do they own the gate and lease it out during the day to other airlines who may be occupying it when QR arrives?
2. Is it cheaper to park at a remote stand or do gate charges apply there as well?
3. Are gate charges a flat fee or based on time/length of use?
4. Since a mobile lounge is used, is there a charge for that as well?

Of course this got me thinking about overflight charges and how they determine those charges...especially in Europe where hundreds of flights fly over a country each day.

Each gate at the airport is owned by the Airport Authority and is assigned to airlines based on their operational needs. Therefore, you can have a number of different airlines using the same gate. However, sometimes, certain flights are assigned to certain gates if some requirement arises. So, the airlines do not own the gates. They are simply assigned them.

2. Is it cheaper to park at a remote stand or do gate charges apply there as well?

It maybe cheaper to park at a remote stand because the aircraft is not taking up gate space at the terminal building nor is it using an air bridge or the electricity, heating/cooling facilities associated with it. There are however, charges that do apply for parking an aircraft at a stand, no matter where it is located

3. Are gate charges a flat fee or based on time/length of use?

Gate charges are often based on "block hours". I understand that at most airports this number is "3 Hours" but it varies from region to region.

4. Since a mobile lounge is used, is there a charge for that as well?

If a mobile lounge it used, it is either provided by the airline, or it is contracted out to a company to carry out the work. But yes, there is a fee associated with it.

Side note - There is 'always' a fee associated with 'everything' in aviation!
