ROW44 And Voip

ROW44's site says they offer VOIP service, but ROW44 is geosync satellite based... doesn't the inherent latency make VOIP not usable?

This is an interesting question to me as well. Residential sat-based Internet systems often have delays of 1000ms+ making them unusable for VoIP.

Considering that geosynchronous satellites are used for calls to some islands around the world (and even as a backup to undersea cables), my guess is "probably not"   You can tell when you are on a call that is via satellite relay...a delay of about a second.

By the way, the cell phone system (especially GSM) already has a fair amount of latency in it due to digital encoding/decoding/encryption/decryption. It is noticable if you call your cell phone from a good old fashioned land line

Indeed. Done that a few times. With my GSM phone the delay is like half a second. Not too bad.
