Why the little concave wing-body line immediately aft and below the wing root leading edge? This seems to have been introduced with the A330 and has become a fixture on subsequent widebodies; what is its role if any? Why is it absent on narrowbodies?

Better air flow around the wing to body fairing...and I would guess to help reduce cabin noise.

It is used to smooth the airflow at the wing fuselage intersection. Note: even the L-1011 had similar area on the lower wing to fuselage fairing!
