I am at still at a loss whether the Air New Zealand / XL Airways was in pure legal terms the former or latter despite the crew being NZs.
Was it D-registered or NZ at the time of the crash.
It was re-painted in NZ livery but did the registration change or not.
An NZ forum were at vitriolic sixes and sevens on the issue.

Flight crew were most definitely XL staff. The acceptance flight was being observed by a NZ Captain with engineers doing things as well but it was (despite what was painted on the tail) still a XL aircraft with german crew at the wheel. Had the acceptance flight been completed successfully it then would have be re-registered to Air NZ (as was the whole point of conducting the acceptance flight).
