I was reading this interesting trip report:

And I came across this image:



I know that EL AL has to take routes to avoid Arab countries that do not allow them to overfly. However, what happens if there is weather enroute on a route like one shown down the Suez in the picture above? You have nowhere to go if you need to go around weather or have a dire medical emergency other than to call it a day and head to Egypt or back to Israel. Has there ever been a time when an Israeli jet has had to diver to say, Sudan or Saudi Arabia? I remember way back when, a NW DC-10 diverted to Tehran on it's way from AMS-DEL. Of course there was the embargo, but US aircraft can overfly Iran. Anyway, what does EL AL do?
