Dear All, I am looking for a source for Boeing 747 variable numbers. I am interested in collecting all of them. As you surely know this number indicates specific airframe, incl all options selected by an individual customer. Mostly a number-block is reserved for expected additional orders by the same customer. First letter gives the aircraft type P = 737, Y = 737NG, R = 747, N = 757, V = 767, W = 777, Z = 787.
The second letter stands for the minor model or a further sub-division . This is the variable (effectivity) block and the three following numbers are the sequence within the block. Note that not all numbers within a variable block actually get built.
Examples :
RA001 the first built 747-121 for Boeing and RC501 for first 747-8F (N747EX).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am also looking for roll out dates for Boeing 747s built between 1988 - 2003. There is a book Jim Lucas: the first twenty years which covers dates up to first dash 400 roll out back in 1988. World Airline Fleets News also covers dates starting from 2003. I miss all the dates inbetween. Thare are 600 roll out dates unveiled so far. I even mailed Boeing's Historian but he never get back to me.
I have been research the story and details of the Queen of the Skies for 30 years.
Please contact me if anyone of you could help me getting these informations.

AFAIK the MSN, line number, variable number cross reference of all 747's (regardless of operator) can only be found in the Boeing 747 Structural Repair Manual (SRM) .
I don't know if the 748 is also already included or will be produced as a seperate 748 SRM.
All other 747 documentation : IPC, AAM etc. are operator-customized and contain only (cross-refence) info about the particular 747 airframes serviced by the operator (or repair station).
Maybe some A-net members that are still active in 747 maintenance (and have access to a 747 SRM) can assist you via a PM.

Hi Gabor, I can't help you with the information you are looking for, but thanks for your explanation of how the variable number is formed. I'd often wondered.
The glass isn't half empty, or half full, it's twice as big as it needs to be.
