I almost never see any departures/landings at TPA's third runway. I think I did once but it was just a private jet.

It all matters on the winds. Last week, Tuesday, wednesday and thursday they used 9/27 several times because of the storms coming off the gulf. Also whenever they have the Macdill airfest they will use the cross wind also.

I think it's still 9/27, or did that change when they recently changed the north/south ones?

Jay

It's now 10/28.

Assuming he's talking about commercial airline jets, then

Slight corrections:

1. MacDill Airfest, if the winds are northerly they'll use 10/28. If southerly, no.

2. Excluding nearby thunderstorm activity, I think the crosswinds have to be over 30 mph for 10/28 use.

In the last ten years, I've seen commercial ops on 10/28 about 6, 7 times, including 2 BA777. It's usually during Airfest or a nearby hurricane/tropical storm. Mostly landings, but a few takeoffs. Now that Airfest has moved to November, great sun angle and more chance for northerly winds.

To add: I've wondered why they don't use it when one of the other runways is closed. It's certanly long enough.

I don't think they need to, with the volume at TPA.

They were using a few weekends back due to thunderstorms off the approach end of the parallels.

BTW, I think they use the 'third runway' every day, since it's 1L/19R as far as I know. 1R/19L and 10/28 were there from the early days

Looks like there will be some use this week around Thu/Fri. With Irene off the east coast, if the winds are WSW-WNW at 30 mph or greater, I would expect airliners to use 28, at least for landings......but maybe some takeoffs as well.

So keep checking the weather channel or call ATIS

Ditto, although WN likes to use Runway 28 for landings when operations are landing/departing to the south (FLL/PBI quicker arrivals?)

Back when Gulfstream had a busier operation at TPA with their B1900 fleet, departures were common on Runway 10. GA prop aircraft are occasionally seen taking off on runway 28 and taking an immediate right or left turn depending on operation flow.

During my time in the TPA area, I have never seen arrivals on runway 10, even though there are published approaches for it. The VOR approach has the planes coming in from the southwest, possibly to avoid the noise-sensitive office parks & the "Venice"-like subdivision off the Causeway.

It was in use today for arrivals from about 13:00-14:00 due to t-storms. Although departures were from 19L with the hard right turn (over the Hyatt).

It is rare, but pretty cool to see arrivals coming in from the west. Last I saw this was a couple years ago when a hurricane was in the gulf. I can't remember the name of the storm at this point. That afternoon even BA 2167 did the arrival.

I've landed on 28 a few times in both a CO B738, Gulfstream B190's, and the fun Cape Air C402's.....oh yeah it was numbered Runway 27 then, As well as my many arrivals and departures from TPA Air Center on 9/27 while flying many different Cessna single engine aircraft.
