I am wondering why do some Dash 8's have a taxi light on the nose of the aircraft and others the light on the nose wheel. In addition why have the newer built Q200 and 300 not been fitted with a flashing type light on the tail as opposed to the strobe type they have. Thanks for any replies

Early build -100s have the light in the nose while later build -100s and the rest have it on the nose strut. I think the reason is the lights didn't cool as well being enclosed in the nose. The trade off is that they are subject to more vibration on the nose strut and burn out quicker as a result. The fix for that is the light is now on a PSEU circuit and only comes on with the weight on all three wheels.

Another downside to the light in the nose is in IMC at night. It makes it damn near impossible to see a runway with the thing on. Not much better with the approach and flare lights either.

I don't know what you're referring to on the other question. All of our -200s and -300s had the same light set up as the -100s, but they were all early build frames, the latest being a '97 build.

Our Dash 8's (100/300) have a mix of nose and nose strut lights. I always wondered why the switch. Ours also do not have that WOW mod as DashTrash spoke about. For that, our SOP's require us to switch the light off just before selection of climb power, at 400ft AGL.

Funny enough, for our ops, I actually refer the light on the nose rather than the strut. I find this setup gives a broader view from the light. The nose strut lights always seem dim. In the Caribbean, we don't much IMC weather on the ground anyway.

I take it your referring to the strobe lights as found on the Q400's. Perhaps a Q400 person can correct me if I'm wrong, but the Q400's do not have wingtip strobe lights. Their strobes are located on the upper and lower of the fuselage in addition to the one on the top of the tail. Why the switch? Beats me!
