Hey guys,

The 727 is my favorite plane, and unfortunately the only chance i get to see one at my local airport is with Fedex. Each weeknight (for as long as i can remember), there is a single 727 Fedex flight that takes off at my local airport (PVD), flight FDX1254 (which comes back early in the morning under flight number FDX1454). Each night at 9pm it takes off and i check it through flightaware as it goes over my house.

Well, for the past 2 days it hasn't been a 727, but now a 757. And when i check all of the 727's flying at any given time, it appears that Fedex is only flying about three 727's (it used to be a lot more).

Here's the flight out of PVD:

And here's another FDX route that used to use 727's, but is now using the 757:

And here's a FDX flight that's "switched it up" recently, going from all 757's but used the 727 on Oct 31 and Nov 1:

So i have to ask, could Fedex have retired a bunch of 727's this week?? I REALLY hope it isn't so... I'm hoping there's simply something wrong with scheduling or something like that- could it be?

As I type this, FX has 15 727s in the air. It could be an upgrade for peak.

I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning...Smells like victory!

They still have quite a few 727's...They are just putting the 757 into more markets. They are bring 757 and 777's on at an incredible rate. You will see 727's there for quite a while but they do retire them usually every few months they may retire one 727. Usually they donate them to A@P schools of fire departments for training purposes.

Fedex retired one most recently on November 3, to VCV. They've been trickling out of the fleet at the rate of one or two a month recently.

According to aerotransport.org, Fedex has 51 722F's still in service. 39 752F's are in service with another 20 procured in storage or cargo conversion. Eventual planned 752F fleet is 87.

The 752F is replacing the 722F on a one-for-one basis more or less. With a remaining fleet of 51, the 722F fleet will be around for several years to come.
