Hello,

Can anybody provide me with some soild information or good links about the cost of refurbishing a widebody commercial aircraft? I'm especially interested in costs of refurbishing only one class, for example the economy class.

Another thing I would like to know is the time it takes to complete such a refurbishment process. Can a simple refurbishment (old Y-Seats out, new Y-Seats in) be done in a day?

Again, any useful information is highly appreciated

I have heard prices of around $50000 for a refurbishement of old seats and overhead bins for an ATR 42.

Virgin are spending £100m on the refurbishing of their Gatwick based 747-400's in the coming months. This includes new seating and a new IFE system.

Not all 100 million is going towards the refit... I believe half of the 100 is going to the refits and the other half to the new services/ground improvements etc

If you were just changing seats, you could do it in a day.

If you change seat pitch, you have to move all the PSU's so that will slow you down. If you've got any kind of IFE but what's going in is the same as what came out the harnesses should connect up...if you're changing IFE then you're going to have to rerun all the wires and that will take even longer.

And if you increase the number of seats, you may have floor structure to rework.

If you move any lavs or galleys, then floor structure, overhead structure for tie rods, water system, drain system, waste system, possible galley chiller ducting, floor coverings, overhead bins, sidwall, wash lights, ceiling and electrical may come into play.

It is wise to do reconfigurations concurrently with a C check or heavier.

How complex can an interior refurbishment be? Sometimes airlines outfit aircraft with entirely new interiors, correct?
This means new galleys, lavs, bins, sidewalls, seats, class dividers, windscreens... the cost of all that could easily run a few million $ per aircraft.

The one I am working on today will go over 30k hours of engineering not counting seat and galley design.

It's actually about £55m spread over 8 aircraft. But that is a complete refit; J/W/Y, new sidewalls, lighting and IFE.

it will probably take about a month per aircraft. Usually a bit more for the first to be refitted, and a bit less for the last.

So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

Why is that? Different airlines have different seat pitch, so does that mean that some planes of the same type have enforcements here and there and others don't?

Every LOPA has to be analyzed for interior stress. Just because your old layout passed doesn't mean the new one will. Yes, some planes of the same type may require different floor structure depending on the LOPA. The most common thing is to swap out floor panels (the floor panels form the shear diaphragm that takes most of the fore/aft load).

Tom.
