There's currently some discussion going on in South Africa about the president's recent trip to New York for the UN. This got me wondering: South Africa's presidential aircraft is a BBJ (which generation, I'm not sure) -- can a BBJ (in any guise) make it from JNB (or Pretoria) to JFK non-stop?

No model of BBJ (based on the 737) can make it, but all models of the 777 VIP and 787 VIP range, as well as the 747-8 VIP, can do it per Boeing Business Jet's site.

Sorry -- yes, I should have been more specific. I believe it's a 737-based BBJ (if it's the one I saw at JNB a couple years ago).

JNB to NYC is about 7900 nautical miles, or so. A BBJ1 has about 6000 or so, that is the most of 737BBJs.

So a non-stop is not possible, but if they have ETOPS, a flight with single stopover in Cape Verde should be posssible.

The discussion I heard on the radio this morning was that the Prez was on the BBJ and it was being "followed" by a Bombardier biz jet because "the Boeing had recently been serviced and there were questions about its reliability".

The DJ said "why not just put the Prez on the more reliable plane? What are they going to do if something goes wrong, catch him on the wing?"

Sometimes I wonder what cartoon world I live in.

That's hilarious. I wonder what was actually going on.

And that's only with several optional fuel tanks in the cargo compartment.

I know this is a tangent topic but it is related.

It turns out the president's BBJ was shadowed by TWO aircraft on his recent trip to New York.

One of them was a SAA 342 that went as far as Las Palmas.

What an incredible waste of taxpayers' money. We are becoming more like Zimbabwe every day.
