Delays are costly to airlines... This is very common knowledge. I know of some of the causes such as running APU longer, missed connections and have been told airports can charge late fees if a gate is used longer than anticipated, especially if an airplane is awaiting that gate. What is the breakdown of expenditures for lates and why they are so costly dollar wise...

I don't know the breakdown but you also have to factor in crew time problems, aircraft delays on other flights that aircraft was supposed to fly, possible hotel bookings and food vouchers.

I think it depends on so many variables that it would be tough to actually break them down. Aircraft type, flight length, airline costs, etc. Even the same flights, same type, same delay, same aircraft type might have completely different numbers.

Hmm how about cargo carriers? Same? Or does it not matter as much? Some people (who I feel are out to lunch) tell me that delays can cost between 2000 to 5000 dollars per minute..

Cargo carriers such as FedEx and UPS I wouldn't doubt. Anything overnighted needs as much time as possible at the sorting hub. Whether or not it is that expensive I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me.

At Northwest we had a really neat tool to estimate the financial impact of a delay or cancellation. One could choose a generic flight or adjust it with various inputs.
Inputs included:
-Aircraft type
-To/from hub
-% local vs. connecting passengers
-Load factor
-Time of day
-Region
-Controllable or uncontrollable
-Advance notice prior to event
-etc.
Output costs were:
-Crew rescheduling costs
-Vouchers/accommodations/mileage credits
-Goodwill
-Downline flight impact from no aircraft/crew
-Less some saved costs, like fuel, navigation charges, landing charges, etc.

From the cheapest airline around (narrowbodies only)... it costs an average of $100 per minute for delays... (for anything later than a 15 min delay)... At other countries, it can definitely be higher... (some at the $150 mark, some much higher).
