Yeah, some of those scenes make the holds look like the size of a stadium.

I believe on older aircraft it could be up to 30cm between containers, however it is determined by location of the 'stops' on the hold floor. As has been mentioned, it tends to be only a couple of inches, if that. The containers are designed the be a pretty tight fit.

If you stack load them, which is allowed on certain types, the distance is nil, naught, nada, zip, zilch.
