How Easy To Buy & Fly A Plane With No License?

Hi all,

I've just received an email saying that a microlight that crashed earlier today in Scotland was piloted by an unlicensed individual who had received no flying tuition and no assistance in aircraft purchase.

How easy is it to simply go out, buy an aircraft and take off? Is there any checks in place to stop someone buying an aircraft and simply taking to the skies as appears to be the case in this instance?

Registration G-MVSV which is showing on the CAA database as de-registered.

its just like the checks with driving


if you have enough money to go buy a plane, there is nothing to stop you from flying unlicensed- until an inspector does a ramp check and finds out you were flying without a license (then you would face some sort of punishment, similar to driving with out a license)

Ultralight that might be, but anyhting bigger would almost always need a flightplan filed out before take-off .. do the FBOs make random check's wether or not you have your license with you (or even have one)?

No really, someone can take a Cessna out and fly around. Depending on the airspace they may or may not have to be in contact with ATC. You don't need a flight plan taking off from an uncontrolled airport in the middle of no where.

Is that something my instructor would have done when I was taking lessons on a 172? I didn't think we had a flight plan...

What about a controlled airport? We would fly out of KPWK which has a manned tower like 20hrs a day. And it borders ORD.

in the United states there is no requirement to file a flight plan for VFR flight- so if you owned an aircraft you could (it is possible but against the Law) fly it with out a pilots liscense.

it would be very rare to find anyone willing to let some one else use their aircraft without seeing a pilot certificate.

in the USA the FAA will periodically preform random ramp checks...asking for the proper license, maps, ratings, registration, etc.

if you were to do anything wrong they would also investigate and figure it out that way.

Even if there is the need for a flight plan (standard VFR/IFR/international), you only have to fill in the name of the captain, not his license number. You can file a flight plan with no license at all. I takes a little aviation knowledge, though.

Out of a controlled airport (like ANR, OST, LGG,...) you can fly easily without anyone checking your license, in fact I've never met one guy who checked mine (a UK JAA PPL) , and it would feel rather be strange if they did...

It is very easy to buy an aircraft and "fly" it without a license imo. It's rather a question how far you would get without any training...

In Europe, you only need FPL for VFR flying in some specific cases - flying across borders (and not even then is it always the case), flying above a set level like FL095 or something, maybe for some specific controlled airport, like military operated bases.

But in general, you can buy/build a plane, and just fly it off. Heck, if you live out in some rural area, and have a relatively even bit of a grass meadow on a big enough plot of land, many countries will even allow you to park it down in your own garage and fly it out there...

then again, if you can afford to buy a plane and operate it, you can probably afford to pay an instructor for some 20 hours to sit in and get you going...

Happens all the time up here in North Dakota. A lot of the crop dusters don't have licenses, never mind a Commecial endorsement. Let me tell you, those guys are some of the best pilots I've seen. They're crazy, (had one land behind me at a rural airport with a 3000 foot runway, while I was on the runway determining if I had enough runway to take back off) but good pilots.
