How is Captain selected in your company? Do they go by seniority or past train/check history? Once they are selected, what training do they do? How long till they are on their own?

Seniority. And of course you need to fulfill all the legal requirements to become captain.

Our training to Captain takes roughly 6 months from day one of Captains training until final checkout as captain. And then he is on his own.
Then he gets the regular checks, but we all get them, no matter if CP, SFO, FO.

A Capt check out given training scheduling availability takes approximately 5 weeks start to finish; that's something like 26-28 training events, plus 25+ hours of IOE flight training.

Seniority. But then of course the candidate has to pass all the training and checks. There are a handful of failures so it's not a guarantee. Also, I think all of our upgrades currently have at least 5000 total time (at least) and many have thousands more. Finally, most of them also have at least 4000-5000 on type. But that's just because our upgrade is pretty slow right now.

But when you're number comes up and if you've bid for it, you'll get the chance to go through it.

I think seniority at the vast majority of major airlines. However train/check history will count. Then again if you aren't passing your checks on a regular basis bidding for Captain is the least of your worries so it's a bit of a moot point.
