I am currently writing my Bachelor Thesis on how airlines handle and organize the introduction of a new aircraft-type into their fleet in the form of a project. By definition this task should always be handled as a project, so say Lufthansa orders the B747-8, then they have a team somewhere that is responsible for coordinating all the work that comes with this "project".
My focus is on how these teams work and what tasks are part of such a project, like making sure every branch of the company is prepared, contracts and legal paperwork are done when the aircraft arrives, airports provide facilities (especially interesting if you think of the A380), the marketing department promotes the plane to the customers (this also might be something special with the A380), tech-ops is prepared for the new a/c-type, route-planning, crew training needs to be planned...you name it. Since this always is a project, meaning something that's not part of everyday-business for an airline, there must be a team that supervises everything and that all different branches report to. They probably also create the schedule and deadlines for certain things.
Of course you can find a lot of books regarding aviation management and project management, but it is rather hard to find some insight into the works of something like the above mentioned project. I have a contact at Lufthansa that offered to set me up with some guys there that might help me. As you can imagine, it is incredibly valuable for me to gain some practical knowledge about this from people that actually do this stuff.
Now, given the expertise in this forum, I was wondering if any of you have any experience in this field or know of any contacts, resources, books, sources or other things that might be of help for my research topic. I would greatly appreciate any help, so if you think you have something that might be of use to me, please feel free to share it here or send me a PM.
