I was wondering where the microphone for the CVR is located in a cockpit.
Is it a feed from the pilots headsets or something remotely located within the cockpit.
From tapes it appears to pick up all surrounding sounds. TIA

737NG voice recorder gets inputs from the Capt's mic/headphone, F/O's mic/headphone, First observers mic/headphone and an area mic on the voice recorder panel located on the P5 overhead panel.

There's generally a microphone that captures ambient noise (so you can hear things like switches being flipped, handles being moved, etc.) and then the headsets and microphones get recorded as well. But things will vary based on the type of airplane and the type of recorder.

Apart from the channel per Crew member & observer, there would be a channel connected to the area mike normally located in the overhead panel, that picks up Audio within the Flight deck.
