Ramp accidents happen on a regular basis, as chronicled here on A-net. The damage to aluminum skinned A/C is relatively straight forward: you cut out the damaged area and rivet in the replacement. Obviously, carbon fiber cannot be repaired this way. What are the options to repair "ramp rash" on the new 787?

i´m sure the designer already adress this issue, and they have what is called "repair kits".

But obviously here someone will be much more specific and you made a great question...

Correct, you can't rivet on carbon fiber. You cut out the damaged area and connect a replacement with non-expanding fasteners (Hi-Loks or similar). You can use aluminum (temporary), titanium, or new carbon.

You can patch it the the same way you patch aluminum now. Or, if you want a cleaner repair, you do a scarf repair with a new layup. This is exactly the same repair that's used on nacelles today, which are almost exclusively FRP and have been for decades.

Tom.
