Is The A380 Cargo Hold Narrower Than The 747?

In a previous thread that I have done, I asked if it is possible for the A380 to carry side-by-side LD-1 containers like the 747, and the answer I got that it isn't, since the A380 was designed around side-by-side LD-3s.

Which leads me to this question: Is the A380 cargo hold narrower than the 747? The A380 fuselage is slightly wider than the 747, but it seems strange that Airbus would design it with a narrower cargo hold. Unless there is a different reason why the A380 cannot carry side-by-side LD-1s. LD-1s and LD-3s occupy the same amount of floor space, however, the outer contour on the LD-1 is larger than that on the LD-3.

As far as i know the LD-1 was specifically designed for the contour of the 747 hold so it's only optimised for that airframe.
The LD-3 is the standard widebody container now, so most designs will would be spec'd to fit this.

That is correct

Yes, so is the 777, 787, A300, A330, A340, A350. The holds are contoured to the shape of LD3s, and that is the volume used when designing the fire suppression system. Making the hold wider would not be utilized, and would result in additional weight.

No, in practice most 747 operators (they few that are left) only use LD3s anyway. They are interchangeable with other widebody aircraft without repacking, and do not require two different pools of containers.

That is correct, the LD-1 is considered to be the non-standard container by industry.
