Do you have quirks? Little things that you do that aren't necessarily in the POH? For example, I always roll the elevator trim to neutral in a Cessna before takeoff by looking behind to SEE if the trim is really neutral. I rock the wings in the preflight to loosen any water that may be behind the tank baffles AND to listen for loose tools inside the wings. I pull the throttle to idle after the mag check and then pull the carb heat to see if the engine quits (useful to know on final). I blow into the static port to see if water comes out. I always acknowledge a clearance from ATC with the A/C number last, because that's the number that I don't really have to think about remembering: "out of 5 for 3, 270 on the heading, cleared for the approach, 30 Echo." Share your quirks with the rest of us.

I perform a VOR check before EVERY IFR flight, even though it's already current. When flying with other pilots, I always do the flight planning.

These are my small quirks, But hey Quirks=safetly.  Smile

Sure, they are called gotcha's most aircraft have lists of them that are several pages long...

For instance, on the G-IV, if you encounter st. elmos fire on the windshield, you have to turn off the windshield heat or the windshield heat controllers/heat sensors may be damaged.

If you start the #2 engine with the utility system off, sometimes it won't pressurize the flt hydraulics to 3000 psi, but all you have to do is switch the utility pump to on/arm to correct the situation.

The list goes on and on, a few have to do with accidentally wiping out all of your waypoints or fail-safe brake-by-wire systems that prefer to rip the gear off instead of letting you run off the end of the runway.

as far as personal quirks, it's called the "two-VOR rule" and it's the most important one to know!

Does anyone know about the Falcon 900 Arthur-Q gotcha that kills the passengers and leaves the flight crew unscathed? I know two Olympic pilots sitting in a Greek jail who can tell you about it...

ThirtyEcho, I was just shown how to check the trim for takeoff by actually looking at it a few days ago, and I think I may adopt that one. I haven't really been flying long enough myself to adopt too many quirks, so some might be just what I've learned from my CFI. I've seen him blow on the stall horn a few times, but I'm not doing that. Besides, I'm too short. He also says, "Pressure's green, tac is up, airspeed alive," EVERY TIME you take off. He says people tease him about it all the time but I find myself thinking it even when he's not in the plane.

Sophie: Funny you mention that, haha. I have my students call out: "Airspeed alive, Green, Green, Normal" This is to cross check that the airspeed is moving, oil temp and pressure are in the green and the RPM is spinning what it should be.

The Anal CFI strikes back.  Nuts
