So, as we came onto stand in AMS from JHB this morning, the 777 on the neighbouring stand was chocked and no beacon on, yet the strobes were going ten to the dozen for a good 15 minutes or more. Why would this likely be?

Good point and better stated than my post. I was trying to make the point that almost assuredly the issue was that the switch for the strobes was on for whatever reason, rather than a peculiar failure of some sort.
