I noticed when browsing the FAA's page the other day that there is currently no demand for controllers (in any field). Is this because of the threat posed by sequestration (budget cuts) and the news that as many as 2,000 controller positions may be cut?
I wonder what that means for all current controller students. Are they going to find themselves unemployed once graduated?
Has the FAA made any public announcements regarding the future of controller applicants? How will the demand for controllers change as the FAA transitions to NextGen?

IMHO, the FAA baselines of what they believe they need, but miss the boat on what the numbers are who are actually certified and useful. They consider the numbers based upon how many are actually assigned to a facility rather than how many are actually certified on control positions and CPC's and then what it takes to run the joint each shift each day.

I see lots of positions, but for current employees. I have heard through the grapevine that all off the street hiring is on hold (be it CTI, VRA, RMC etc.)

As of right now there is still a hiring panel scheduled for early March for at least CTI applicants. (sequestration may change that). The FAA is honoring all firm offer letters for class dates up till Feb 1, 2013. Once graduated from the academy students head directly to their facility, regardless of sequestration or not. So no, they will not be unemployed leaving OKC.

A straight up bid to apply off the street hasn't been around for a while and I've been told will never happen again, though some off the street center washouts still show up at the academy. Interesting you consider CTI and VRA off the street.

They start day 1 with no seniority (unless they got it at a NATCA contract tower, FSS etc). If they havent worked in the FAA before, we call em off the street here. I know there is a difference in the way the VRA, RMC, CTI, and "OTS" controllers are hired, but at the facility, they are all new hires.

What states did you put down? Im not really up to date on what the hiring buzz is right now (except the sequestration stuff) but talk to the ladies over in HR and see where the demand is. I wanted to go to Orlando or Alaska, they said Texas was going to have alot of hiring, so off to IAH I went. I transferred when I had the chance.
