This is something that has been bugging me for quite some time. I have seen a number of airlines now, notably Transaero, Alitalia and Air One but I am sure other do as well, use the Irish register to register their planes. Why is it that companies in Russia and Italy and elsewhere use this register so often? I can only think it must either be a tax thing or that these planes are owned by an Irish leasing agency.

Thanks for your replies, seems that taxes (as I suspected is a big reason), similar to many biz jets using the Manx register. However I thought the location of the leasing agency would not have had a massive influence as many ILFC leased aircraft (to quote just one example) operate under the register of the airline's choice. Thanks anyway for the information.
