While traveling around many different cities in the US, I am hearing a lot of employees worrying about their cities and the RFP's that out out for them. What used to be mainline work, had gone to Express and now to other service providers based on cost and not allegiance. Does anyone know the status of cities that are curently in the RFP process. Seems like an intence process for the employees waiting to hear what company they may work for next. DGS seems to be doing quite well, however I still find it odd that carriers like US and UA would want to have an affilate of a competetor work on their aircraft. When push comes to shove with staffing on the ramp, which carrier would get serviced first? DL or US, UA?
This is just one example of many but I would like to know you opinions on the matter. Cost cutting may look good in the beginning, but if the product fails, then the cost savings are out the door.

My understanding of how DGS handles their contracts, the unit of workers that handle DL are completely separate from the unit that handles the contracts, to eliminate the sense of favoritisim. Contracts in many cases specify the amount of workers required for minimum and if on-time and other service metrics are not met, that operator will lose the contract.

The same people that work DL here work UA and worked NW and worked CO.

Either way it seems from a business standpoint, it would be wise to give any favoritisim to the contracts as that would be the revenue stream. DGS handling a DL flight poorly doen't jeopardize the DL contract in the same manner it would for a UAX contract.

Same here in ATW. When I used to work mornings, there were many times where I would be the gate agent for the 6:00 UA departure to ORD and then walk across the hall and do either the 7:00 MSP or DTW departure for DL. The DL passengers would hear me do the UAX announcements and vice-versa. Needless to say, it didn't take the locals long to figure out that we were working both.

It does, actually. At the stations in which DGS does the Delta ground handling, DGS won the contract over other service providers when the RFP was issued. DGS could just as easily lose those contracts for poor performance as any other ground handling company.
While it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, Inc., DAL Global Services is a separately-run business from Delta Air Lines, just as MLT Vacations, Delta Private Jets, etc. are.

To piggy back on..... Here in SAN at the Commuter terminal where American Eagle, United Express (Sky west) and DL fly out of. That one ground handler does(Not DGS, Skywest) ALL services now. (that is within the last year). So, it's quite interesting to see a person wearing his eagle ramp gear, marshaling a United Airplane, then board a Delta flight.

SAN used to be a SkyWest handled station, but lost out on the RFP for SAN and a number of other west coast stations to Eagle, ironically, not long before SkyWest took over Eagle's 50 seat west coast flying. So within a couple of months you lost SkyWest ground stations that handled Eagle and SkyWest flights, and gained SkyWest flying under the Eagle brand going to brand new Eagle ground handling stations.

In MEM we have quite the show of ground handlers with the only quality one being DGS which most likely will soon be at outstation capacity I believe. Jetstream works below the wing for US, and GAT handles above and below wing for UA(Express) now, lost my job because of it. I worked with ExpressJet in MEM for years originally with CO then went through the merger with UA. Our station along with Skywest operation was put out for RFP and lost the contract. However, GAT had signed a three year contract with UA but their performance is so bad UA is putting MEM back out for RFP again. DGS will most likely end up with it I imagine, and it will be a complete stand alone op from the DL side if they do. I work for Eagle now, we handle all of AAs and our flights above and below wing. MEM used to be a mainline worked AA station. UHH no telling whats to come out of our merger with US, options are stay Eagle and higher jetstream people, go mainline again(very unlikely) and RFP...
