I just wanted to know what is that bump on the top of this Boeing 747-100 not the hump where the passengers and the cockpit is but there's like a grey circle with a bump. It can also be seen if you look on top of Dutch. Does anyone know what it is or is it just dirt?

Its an old SATCOM (satelite (sp?) communications) antenna. My understanding was that it was all the rage in the early to mid-seventies, but never went anywhere.

Most pre -75 built 747s carried this antenna case, but it cannot have been such an important antenna system. By far the most of these 747s were modified from the mid 70s on and this (ugly) small hump was replaced. Today there is just one 747 left worldwide with this device (a 747-282B of PIA).
