Intake At The Vertical Stabilizer Of CRJ700s

I tried to find out if this question was asked before and I did find something in the archives, but since the picture linked in that thread was no longer available, I couldn't really tell if the question back then was actually the same as the one I have.

In this picture: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Styri...d=35645fa92b3d52f220f6e3be432eabd9 It is clearly visible that all of Bombardier's CRJs seem to have some sort of an air intake where the front of the vertical stabilizer and the fuselage meet. My simple question is: What is the purpose of that intake and do other types of aircraft have it as well?

Seemed to me that it must be the APU intake, but after reading this thread:
APU Inlet (by A346Dude Mar 24 2008 in Tech Ops)
I saw that in reply 4, Planenutok explains that, "On the CRJ 700 that i work on the apu has a door on the right side below the vertical stab as shown in this photo. The inlet at the base of the vertical stab is the pack inlet."

It's the Ram Air Intake. Air is drawn in through the intake and passes across the precooler and dual air-to-air heat exchangers of each pack before being discharged through exhaust vents. There's also a shutoff valve that when opened allows the ram air to be used for instrument display cooling along with ventilation of the flight deck and cabin. This would only be used in abnormal operations. Ram air is also used for hydraulic system cooling for two of the three hydraulic systems.

I believe the DC-9 has a similar layout too with the gap, and the Tu-154 and 727 have a bigger APU there
