Hello dear a.nutters,

a few minutes of googling told me that both the Ka-50 and the Mi-28 are equipped with ejection seats, but they haven't been used in earnest. What I've learnt is...

...in the case of the Ka-50, an explosive charge detaches the rotor from the helicopter, and then the ejection seat fires upwards.

The Mi-28 is equipped with ejection seats that fire to the side and downwards.

My questions are:
- why didn't the western countries bother to develop an ejection seat for helicopters?
- in the case of the Ka-50, is the whole rotor separated from the aircraft, or only the rotor blades?

Any information on this strange topic is appreciated!

David

The Sikorsky S-72 RSRA had ejection seats. A test of the seats can be seen in this video, starting at 1:24:

Thank you (a bit late!) for your reply!

I didn't really know that helicopter ejection seats existed outside of the "Goldeneye" movie.

Shouldn't the Helicopters have Autorotation facility to land with no Power.

That doesn't help much if your tail rotor has been shot off.

Regarding the Ka-50, has anybody else produced a single seat attack helicopter?
