I noticed how tonight's (and I believe I have seen it before, too) DY7201, OSL-BKK has taken a somewhat southernly route. As far as I can tell, the flight seems to deliberately avoid Russian airspace. Any insights?

I think Russia still has high overflight/ATC charges. Some carriers probably prefer to take a routing that avoids Russia to reduce their costs. Also have to consider winds, weather, fuel consumption etc. as it may sometimes be cheaper to pay the fees if a shorter flight time saves enough fuel to compensate. Flight planning computer programs normally consider all those factors when choosing a route.
