Different Size Of Overhead Bin

I was surprised to find out that the size of overhead bins look different in the wallside and the middle aisle.

In Boeing 777s, the large one placed in the wallside whereas the small one is in the middle aisle.
Airbus 330s, opposite - large bins are in the aisle and small bins are in the wallside.

I don't understand why they designed different size of the overhead bin for either middle aisle or wallside and why can't we have all the same size?

Usual Y class seating on the A330 is 2-4-2 compared to 3-3-3 and increasingly 3-4-3 on the 777 (except for some early 777s that were 2-5-2 and 3-4-2). If the window-side bins on the A330 were wider they would extend over the aisle and passengers in the window seats would be bumping their heads when they stood up. The 777 bins also pivot up into the ceiling which results in less obstruction over the aisles.

That's my guess as to the explanation for the issue you raise.

Center shelf bins on widebodies has historically been an Airbus thing, while Boeing has historically favored "translating" (open and slide down) or pivoting center bins. My beef with the Airbus style center shelf bins is that they intrude on more cabin space than Boeing's bins, thus giving the cabin a more cramped appearance. The 777 was the first to pioneer high capacity outer pivot bins, which make use of ceiling space that would otherwise be wasted with shelf bins. Since the 777, Boeing has applied outer pivot bins to its other aircraft, including the 767, 744, 748, 787, and Sky Interior 737. Now even Airbus is moving away from shelf bins and is now realizing the advantages of pivot bins, and has made pivot bins an optional feature on the A380 and standard on the A350.

It makes me wonder if Airbus will include pivot bins standard on the A320neo to better compete with the Boeing Sky Interior. C&D Zodiac has proposed to Airbus the A320 SmartBin, hoping that Airbus includes it standard on the A320neo.

Why the beef? I actually don't mind the way they're built on the older models, and find that the bins on the 32x series are actually a little better than what we see on the 777 (even if not as pretty). Things like gasper vents and being able to position your reading lights are better suited to this design.

Interesting that you mention this. The A380s I have the most experience with are CZ's; I work those about three times a week on average. They actually have both types, and on both decks at that. While there are certainly pros & cons here and there, they're same enough that it's really hard to have that much of a preference. I will say that the "new" variant there is still more 'Airbus' like in this way than what you see on the 777 & Sky Interior. IMO, it's a nice compromise and represents the ideal for space and utility.

They'll go with whatever works best for their customers. They can update the look without having to go as far as pivoting, but if that is what Airlines are asking for, if anything it should be easier in a 32x than a 73x given the better available space.

Aftermarket companies like Heath Tecna were offering piviot bins before Boeing copied the concept.

And I'll bet you've seen it all by now. I have seen pax in third-world countries try to board with loads the size of a davenport and try to stuff them into the overhead. Livestock, etc. If I have to endure sitting by an old goat I prefer they be two-legged rather than four.  

Will the overhead bins ever be large enough?

Really? I know older Boeing narrowbodies such as the 727 and 737 Jurassic as well as older 747s (100/200 series) had pivot bins, however, unlike the pivot bins on Boeing's newer aircraft since the 777, they did not use any space above the ceiling, thus the pivot bins on those aircraft were much smaller than those found today. On the 777, Boeing realized they could use some of the wasted space above the ceiling by introducing the modern extra large pivot bins found on Boeing widebodies and Sky Interior 737s found today.

I presume it was due to the 2-5-2 seating arrangement DL's MD-11s had, since the standard shelf bins would have been more difficult to reach from the aisle with that layout.

Similar to the translating bins developed by Kelley-Morrow Enterprises for the DC10 aftermarket.
IIRC UA was the only customer.
