Hi,

I need a help for calculating an airport capacity. As far as I've read online, there are some ways to calculate the capacity. It seems calculating the runway capacity is more difficult than calculating the terminal capacity. I have the peak pax numbers for each airport and I take the operating working hours a day is 18 hours.

It sounds all good till now. I found a research paper, suggesting the multiplier calculated by FAA. There're actually 2 multipliers, and I don't know how they're driven. The first one is 0.00045 and the second is 0.0004.

Do you guys know where they come from and how they can be utilized?

I'd be very happy if you help me out.
Thanks a lot.

Calculating airport capacity get more complicated the more detailed you want to get... If you want to calculate an airport like RSW, thats easy, ORD, good luck

There is an FAA advisory circular on it but the key components of calculating capacity are:

Runway configuration
Exit locations
Touch and go factor
% Instrument operations
Mix of aircraft using the airport (size)

Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Thanks for the answer.

I was trying to calculate the terminal capacity also, it seems like the easiest way?

I have the peak passenger numbers in a year for all airports. I'll take the number of operating hours and multiply all by 365.

However, in an article I found online, it does some number crunching with 0.00045 and 0.00040.
Do you have any idea about those numbers?

Airport capacity is just more than runway limits.

You also need to look at the substructures too; Bagroom, counters, security checkpoints, Immigration/customs as well to get a more accurate picture.

Terminal capacity is even more complicated because the annual capacity is defined by your peak season and your weakest functional area.

Key functional areas:

Curb
Check-in
Baggage Screening
Security Checkpoint
Holdrooms
Gates
Apron Parking
Baggage Claim

If there is any seasonality (think an airport in Florida) the busiest month will define capacity because, every other month will automatically be lower.

Thanks guys. Yes, I've read that it depends on many assumptions and it is indeed a complicating computation. I am planing to simplify things. I mean I read that the terminal capacity at Turkish airports is 157m, but I don't know the mathematics behind it.

I will just multiply the peak pax by 16.5 and then multiply by 365. I know it's a rough calculation, but better than nothing?
