After establishing the localizer on an ILS landing, the autopilot turns the plane towards the runway. Is this true in real life, or does the pilot have to turn the plane?

Yes, if the LOC or APP button has been pressed to capture the localizer or perform an autoland respectively, the autopilot will align the aircraft with the runway, provided the correct course has been set.

This is only as far as i know, i could be wrong

Cheers,

Jeff.

Jeff is correct, for an ILS procedure the LOC or APP mode of the autopilot is used to align the aircraft with the centreline.

The pilot may choose to do this manually by following commands from the flight director, which would simply be coupled to LOC or APP in the same way the autopilot was in the above example. This would give a steering command. Dead simple.
