I was wondering how the ADS system operates especially over the Atlantic, is it only in use by some airlines or are most of the newer airplanes, ie. 777 equipped with this system, or is it up to the airlines to decide if their fleets are ordered with the ADS system?

Modified ADS is currently in use to monitor helicopter traffic to offshore oil installations in the north sea. The system is used by Stavanger, Trondheim and Bodoe ATCC in areas with no radar coverage.

And as to fixed wing in general, installation of ADS equipment is still optional.

There are airspaces converting to ADS-B today, especially those with lots of volume to cover. I do hope that we will see it implemented all over soon. Recent tragic events show the need I think...

Cheers,
Fred

I thought I was doing good trying to avoid those airport hotels... and look at me now.
