The airline I work for uses the following schedule:
"Maintenance Walk-around" accomplished after each flight. (has anything falled off the aircraft during the flight)
"Service check" for all aircraft that remain on the ground for more than 8 hours. ( has anybody damaged the aircraft while it was on the ground and is there any thing wrong than might take an extended time to fix)
"A" check. accoumplished every 250 flight hours. this inspection is accomplished using routine task cards. the inspections are general in there detail. also some servicing is accomplished.
"B" check. not used by the airline I work for
"C" check. accomplished every 15 months. this inspection is detailed. many of the components on the aircraft are removed and the aircraft is given a through inspection.
"D" check AKA "Structural inspection" first inspection is accomplished at 84 months, all the remaining inspections are accomplished each 60 months after. this inspection is a very detailed inspection of the structure
"CPCP" Corrosion prevention and control program. is accomplished through out the "C" and "D" check level inspections.
now one thing needs to be understood. some items on the aricraft are inspected at each level of inspection. some are only looked at during their interval.
EX. the areas under the galleys and lavs are only looked at during some "C" checks and at the "D" check (CPCP determined)
the maintenance program is approved by the local FAA and must be followed in order the keep the aircraft in a quality state of maintenance.
you will notice I said these are the intervals for the airline I work for. each airline has their maintenance program approved by their local FAA, so each airline has different intervals.

A much broader question than is readily apparent. This comes up every few months or so, and as such, I recommend you do a search on this site. I and others have answered this question in detail previously in older threads. I can leave you with a brief generality however: ....Letter checks are progressively more comprehensive as you go up and superscede one another-- that is, an "A" is included in a "B" and so forth. As you get into the heavier checks ("C" and up ) it is quite common to break them up into phases to perform portions thereof and minimize downtimes. Again, it's a tough question to answer easily due to the many variations in airline maintainance programs.
