Production stopped in 1986 after Cessna decided to get out of the light airplane market. After a new liability reform law was passed by the Feds they restarted production in 97 or 98 at a new facility in Liberty, Kansas I believe. Production numbers are well over 10,000... plus a French company built Skyhawks under license in France. I am thinking the company was called Reims.
