First I'd like to thank the people who helped me out with my question about the Cubana IL-62 last week. Secondly, I'd like to announce that I now have the second half of the Cubana mystery solved.
Before the Ecuadorean artist Oswaldo Guayasamin passed away, he wanted to build an art gallery with a symbolical meaning. He called it "La capilla del hombre" or "Chapel of man". Now, a few years after his death, it is a reality. It turns out that this project was completed with the help of "president" Fidel Castro and his government, and on friday President Castro was invited to innaugurate this gallery.
For this, he arrived in Quito last Thursday on board 2 Ilyushin IL-62s (Yup, I got a few shots of these planes as they took off. Check them out in a few weeks when I submit them, if Airliners.net accepts them...) But for this, the Cuban govenrment sent these planes to investigate and to do a bit of "reconaissance" on Monday, which was what I saw the other day. The plane didn't land because it was checking if it was safe to land in Quito. Hmmm? Later on that same week they were flying again from one place to the other and were making the scene at Mariscal Sucre International. It was a great sight since you don't get to see that many IL-62s around here.

Interesting report. You should stick it in the main av forum.
You know, an Interflug Il62 made a soft field landing in a field in Germany so they could get it to a little aviation museum in the middle of nowhere. They made a couple of practice approaches and on the second, came within a hair's breadth of disaster when they sank too low (no approach aids in a grazing field) and missed a row of heavy trees at the beginning of the "strip". There is a German language book about the Il62 and the series of photos is heart-stopping.
