My logbook is not the cleanest it could be. There are errors here and there that have been corrected, several different colors of ink, and even some white-out that I used earlier in my flight training before I knew that was a no-no. My signature has even changed significantly over the last several years. This all worries me because I know at some time in the future an employment board will be going through it with a fine-toothed comb. Do most people have minor errors here and there? Are these boards understanding? What has been your experience?

By the way, my entries are still all accurate.

Also, can anyone recommend a professional pilot logbook? I will be flight instructing soon and need to move to another logbook. The current one just does not have enough columns.

Here is the logbook I use, and I think it is the standard as far as "professional" logbooks go. Anyway, I'm pretty sure they'd be understanding of mistakes made early on in your flying career before you knew the ropes. Use black ink from now on, and if you make a mistake, you can cross through it and make (and initial) the correction. I was really ticked one time I saw an instructor write in green ink in my logbook. He obviously didn't give much care to my airline ambitions.

I have had the same experience with the logbooks. I used to use whiteout until an airline pilot that I know said that it wasn't a good idea. I wouldn't be surprised if all pilots run into this sometime or another. Also the logbook that Jhooper recommended is a good one. It has all of the regular columns and additional ones for being 2nd in command, Instruction given as a CFI, and one or two more that I don't remember offhand. Anyway it is a good book to have if you're a CFI (which I am not yet) or a professional pilot.

My logbook is pretty neat, but it has blue and black ink, and some white out here and there.

I didn't know white-out was bad until my CFI checkride, when the examiner mentioned that it was something that I'd want to avoid. What I did was draw a line across all the whited-out sections and initialed it. The reason, that she said the white-out was bad is because you could turn individual entries into flight time in types that wasn't originally recorded (ex: C-172 to Learjet time). Also, she said that the totals section was no big deal, and that it could be done in pencil.

As far as blue ink goes, the only people that have used blue ink in my logbook are people that have been flying longer than I've been alive, including a former C-5 pilot. If they're not stressed about it, then I'm not.

If some company rejects me for the sole reason of blue ink in my logbook, then they're probably not someone I want to work for anyway. No one is going to freak out about a few blue entries, or a little bit of white out here and there.

Speed, you're right, the color of the ink isn't important, it's just that the entry must be permanent. White out is bad as you said, mistakes are made, just be careful how they are corrected. I choose to make a statement under the entry to be corrected that (Above entry made in error due to the following reasons.........) The rule is, don't hide it, fix it.

I think that there would be more raised eyebrows over a logbook that was too neat than over one that showed "normal" enteries, including the occassional corrected mistake. And believe me, no one cares about the color of ink you use.
