Just wondering how does a plane 'skid' off a taxiway? The weight and friction is there, unless the winds are that strong? Or is it simply the pilot taxied too close to the grass and the plane ended up in the mud?

Thanks!

I've seen it happen due to aquaplaning in heavy rain. Here's a good article about it. http://www.gremline.com/page12.html

Its also no different to a car. If you are going too fast and the brakes can't stop you, you will end up off the road.
