The Howard 500 is the apex of GA aircraft with recips. Its performance was more like a beefy turboprop or a small turbojet than it was like any recip before or since. I saw one once and the howl of full takeoff power was unreal; more like a whole squadron of B-25s. Too bad that this is the last one flying:
