Hi guys.

I have a quick question for you.

The photographer of the first photo below of Malta's Intl Airport (MLA), states that this airport's main runway is the longest runway in Europe.

I found a website for Malta's Airport, however, it didn't have any diagrams or info about the airport's runway lengths, etc.

So, can someone please let me know how long the main runway (rwy 32/14), at Malta Intl Airport is ........ preferably in feet, but meters is fine too.

I find it interesting that the island of Malta would have a longer runway than any of the runways at London's Heathrow Intl (LHR), or Paris's Charles de Gaulle Intl (CDG).

Does the length of runway 32/14 have anything to do with it's use by the Concorde? How often does the Concorde fly to Malta?

3544m, about 11600'. KBP has an 4000m (13000') runway, I'm sure there are others in Europe with longer runways.

"this airport's main runway is the longest runway in Europe"

Not quite, at 11,627ft (3,544m)!

Not the longest by a considerable margin in fact.

My first attempt to find a longer one (Luxembourg) was successful - 13,123ft (4,000m). There are several 4,000m runways in Europe.

Heathrow has a 12,802ft runway (3,902m).
Paris Charles De Gaulle has a 13,829ft runway (4,215m).

So Mr Fritz is wrong I'm afraid. Though the runway is long, it is by no means the longest. Concorde usage is not relevant.

RWY 32/14 at Malta is 11,627 feet. Compare that to 12,802 feet for 9L/27R at Heathrow. So Malta is by no means the longest. If i'm not mistaken, the longest runway in europe is at the Zhukovsky flight test center outside Moscow (over 15,000 feet).

Hi guys.

OK, Thanks for letting me know that Malta doesn't have the longest runway in Europe, although 11,627 ft is nice and long. I didn't expect it to even be that long.

I thought it seemed a little odd that the longest runway would be located on a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea instead of at an International Airport in a major city.

I guess Mr Fritz simply received the wrong information.

PS, my mention of the Concorde was just a "shot in the dark!"  Laugh out loud

Both runway in MUC are 4000m (13,123ft). Not the longest, but quite long.

Isn't Edwards AFB runway 17/35 (including lake bed surface) around 7.5 miles long, making it 12,000 meters/36,000 feet roughly?

Seen from the air Malta's runway does seem to take up rather a large proportion of the island.

Hi guys.

Here's some facts I found from a Cape Canaveral (NASA) website. (info from May 2000).

The Kennedy Space Center's runway (for the Space Shuttle landings), is 15,000 feet (4,572 meters) long, with a 1,000-foot (304.8-meter) overrun on each end. The width is about the length of a football field, 300 feet (91.4 meters), with 50 foot asphalt shoulders on each side. The concrete runway is 16 inches (40.6 centimeters) thick in the center.

Other Commercial Intl Airport's runway lenght info........

Florida's Orlando Intl Airport's longest runway is 12,004 feet (3,659 meters) long & 200 feet (61 meters) wide.

New York's John F. Kennedy Intl ...... 14,572 feet (4,441.5 meters) long & 150 feet (45.7 meters) wide.

Chicago's O'hare Intl ...... 13,000 feet (3,962.4 meters) long & 200 feet (61 meters) wide.

Florida's Miami Intl ........ 13,002 feet (3963 meters) long & 150 feet (45.7 meters) wide.

As mentioned by Admiral ackbar, the longest runway at Edwards Air Force Base in California is 7.5 statute miles (12.1 kilometers) long.

Just some neat info.

Typical 12-14,000 feet long runways are a must for large airports...

Excluding the Zhukovsky runway, Madrid Barajas' 36L/18R should be the longest civil airport runway in Europe. 4350m. 14272ft.

Apollo Soucek Naval Airfield's longest runway is 12,000 ft x 200ft mainly for military use. But it's an alternate field for the space shuttle to land here on the east coast.

FL350,

I don't remember details but I believe the 16,000+ ft. runway at Upington, South Africa is the longest civil runway in the world.

That lakebed at Edwards is the longest and widest runway though.

thank goodness for TCAS !
