It's an antenna panel on the tail. I think VOR. There are two on both sides of the tail leading edge.
but some peeling paint IS visible there (that photo was taken about a month earlier).
Theoretically the aircraft could of course have been retrofitted with some expermintal equipment but I doubt they'd do such a sloppy job of painting the fairing

Hi guys.
Check out the silvery grey spot on the right wing root fairing of this 747. It doesn't look like paint chipping away to me because it's to perfectly shaped. (all right angles.)
Do you guys think this spot is just patchwork that hasn't been painted yet?
