If you look at the large version, you will see a spot that looks like 2 halves. It is on the "A" on the tail. What exactly is that?

Looks like peeled off paint...

The same aircraft, when new, about 1 year earlier...

It doesn't look like a paint peeling though. It looks like a patch of some sort. Would the photographer care to chime in.

It's an antenna panel on the tail. I think VOR. There are two on both sides of the tail leading edge.

If it were a dielectric panel it would be evident on all 717s unless it were suddenly retrofitted on this one aircraft only.

If it's indeed a VOR receiver it would have been there on delivery, and on all 717s.
There is no equivalent on the other side of the aircraft

but some peeling paint IS visible there (that photo was taken about a month earlier).

Theoretically the aircraft could of course have been retrofitted with some expermintal equipment but I doubt they'd do such a sloppy job of painting the fairing  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It is a VOR panel. There are two on each side. Every plane has them there. The one in question was most likely changed so the paint doesn't match.

Hi. I got the pictures. That is terrible. (Not the pictures, the paint chipping.)

There is no excuse for that.

Hi guys.

Check out the silvery grey spot on the right wing root fairing of this 747. It doesn't look like paint chipping away to me because it's to perfectly shaped. (all right angles.)

Do you guys think this spot is just patchwork that hasn't been painted yet?

With the spot.
