What Causes A Sonic Boom?

I know that it happens when the aircraft passes the speed of sound, but what actually causes it to boom? I don't think I've ever heard it.

When it has passed the speed of sound, you mean. The boom is a shock wave that the aircraft drags along behind it as long as it's flying faster than sound.
