Standard Aisle Width B737/A320?

What is the standard cabin aisle width for the following:

B737-300 and A320-200.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find out what the aisle width is on the B737-3 & A320-2 on either the Boeing or Airbus websites.  Sad

However, I did get some cabin width info that you can use for a general comparison between the two airliner types. Big grin

The interior cabin width of the B737-100,200,300,400 & 500 versions is 12 feet, 4 inches (3.76 meters). For the B737-600,700,800 & 900 series the cabin width is 11 feet, 7 inches (3.4 meters).

The A320 (no version was specified) has a maximum cabin width of 12 feet, 1 inch (3.70 meters).

The aisles in the B737 & A320 in these photos look very similar in width.

The way I see it. As long as the aisle on a B737 or A320 is wide enough for the beer cart to reach me, then everything's just fine!  Laugh out loud

Here's a picture of the interior of a 737NG, a Qantas bird. As you can see it's more spacious than the older 737. The other picture is the interior of a A319, UAL bird.

Lmp737, the 737NG picture probably create the illusion that it looks like it has a larger aisle because it has Business Class seats in the foreground.

Anyway, here are some interesting figures about the A320 Cabin:
1) Standard Economy Seats
-Layout 3-3
-Wider seat for improved passenger comfort
-62in triple seats seats
-19in aisle
Option for convertable economy/business seats 2-3 layout.

2) Wide Aisle Alternative
-Layout 3-3
-Faster Turnaround and unobstructed cabin service
-59in triple seats
-25in aisle

3) International business class
-Layout 3-2
-72in triple
-48in double
-23in aisle

4) First Class
-Layout 2-2
-Widebody equivalent standards
-57in double seats
-27 in aisle

The B737-100 is 94 feet long. The B737-200 is 100 feet, 2 inches long.

The B737-500 is 101 feet, 9 inches long.

The B737-800 is 129 feet, 6 inches long!  Wow! The B737-900 is even longer.

If you go to the Boeing site, click on Product & Services, then click on Comercial airplanes, then on Commercial Airplane Info (in the window), then on Product Info, then on next generation 737 (in the window). When you get the page with the 737 in the shop, use the search window in the bottom right corner to check out certain 737 models. Big grin

Question: Does the B737-900 require a 2 stage rotation during takeoff & climb to prevent a tailstike?

I recently learned from this forum that some airliners with a lot of fuselage behind the main landing gear can only be initially rotated to about 5 or 6 degrees untill airborne and then the nose is further raised to about 12 or 14 degrees for the climbout. Also, the PNF will call out "VR Stretch" to remind the PF that a 2 stage rotation is required.

I checked Boeing's airport planning manuals, and they show that all 737s from 100 through 900 have an interior width of 139.2 inches. That's 11' 7". The 12' 4" number comes from the external diameter of all 737 models.

As for rotation, I think I recall hearing a -800 pilot mention two-step rotation somewhere on this forum. I would assume if the -800 needs a two step rotation, the -900 would too.

I was reassured by Dw747400's reply. If the 737NG had been narrowed, then it would be a totally new design, surely? And if that is indeed so, making it narrower is surely the step in the wrong direction - don't forget the A320, with its wider cabin, would stand to gain a lot.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the exterior width of the A320 is 3.95m, while the 737 is 3.75m, which is roughly 12' 4". So the A320 has about 8 in. extra, and so I'll expect to have a seat that's 1 in. wider than 737. I've never flown on A320 before - can anyone confirm if the seats are indeed wider?

Airbus regularly touts the wider cabin of the 32X series over the 737/757 as providing addl passenger comfort via slightly wider seats and/or a wider aisle. I bet the overwhelming majority of passengers cannot tell the difference.




Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

Being a broad chap, I do notice and appreciate the extra seat width on the Airbus, especially so in high density configurations.

Take a look at this easyjet A319 interior - they have opted for the wide aisle option for quicker turnarounds.

LMP737, I don't like sarcasm, I'm being observant, like you, putting my case forward, not looking for a fight.

They are not from Airbus.com, I rarely go there. They are actually from diagrams of seat options I have from HAECO maintanence in Hong Kong.

It's up to an airline to decide what the aisle is, depending on those verfy reasons in my post about Airbus's, depends on passenger comfort or quick turn around times.

So I guess it's really up to the airline if they want a large aisle or a small aisle.

The FAA/JAA/CAA/LBA/DGC, etc., have all set a minimum distance between the seat rows for egress purposes. I think the FAA has specified 18", but I won't swear to that. Within those guidlines, it'd really up to the airline to determine what the best fit is. Frontier Airlines made the seats a bit wider and used the narrower aisle. Coupled with the extra 7" interior space on the A320 family, it feels pretty roomy. Hope that helped a bit!!

As Airbus 340 points out, the standard economy seat in the A320 is

1) Standard Economy Seats
-Layout 3-3
-Wider seat for improved passenger comfort

The main reason why this is standard is obviously comfort. But one thing that is rarely pointed out is that if the narrower seats are used, the passenger next to the window doesn't have much room because he tucked up under the sidewall, due to the A320 fuselage curvature. The A320 sports a round fuselage, meaning the widest point is approx seat bottom height. If you install the narrower seats, the window seat is too far outboard, at shoulder height.

The 737 has a double bubble fuselage, meaning the widest point is at the shoulder. The difference between the A320 and 737 at shoulder height is 2.8 inches, or less then half an inch per passenger.

Boeing offers 17.2 inch seat bottoms, where Airbus offers 18 inch seat bottoms (with standard 19 inch aisle).
