Caravelle Engines

Why does this Caravelle smoke so much and why is only the left engine smoking? The other Caravelles I've seen on a.net dont smoke like this.

Maybe the mixture is too rich? My guess would be the pilot needs to lean it out more.

Actually, my real guess would be that the fuel controller is probably acting up or some type of water injection test.

Those are JT8Ds; the #1 was not retrofitted with 2nd generation mixing bottles to reduce smoke. All early JT8s smoked like that.

Didn't the Caravelle have Rolls Royce Avons? How does water injection make more smoke?? Is this caravelle still flying?

Caravelles I, III, VI-N and VI-R had Avon Ra29 engines...
Later models, Caravelles 10, 11 and 12 had JT8D-7...
